Slopes for the study area were derived from the 10 m
DEMs using ARCView's Spatial Analyst. Recall, that in
ARCView, each GRID cell in the output theme contains a
slope value represented in degrees. Slope is calculated
as the rate of maximum change for each cell to its neighbors
is using a 3 by 3 window. We determined the optimal value
to use for separating riparian valleys from confining
hillsides using an iterative process.
We reclassified the ARCView slope grid in to a two category
coverage. Category 1 areas had slopes between 0-5.0 degrees
and category 2 had slopes > 5.0 degrees.
We used this Slope Layer to derive
stream
gradient and
stream
confinement.
