Description: 1:24K USGS ROADS

We obtained the 1:24,000 roads layer from USGS. This was the appropriate scale for our analysis. Unfortunately, the data were not available for the entire study area.

There were, however, 4,451.5 km (2,766.0 mi) of roads mapped in the subset of the study area shown in the figure to the right. This is almost equal to the length of roads in the 100K layer mapped for the whole study area !

Considering only the area covered by the USGS roads coverage, the road density worked out to be 0.025 km of roads per ha, or almost double that calculated from the 100K roads layer.

Uses: We used these data to calculate road frequencies.
Notes: As with the streams data, data scale is important. With larger scale data sets, more detail is visible; therefore, the results of certain analyses are influenced accordingly.
