1964 Dams

Description
Dams alter watershed hydrology by evening out the extremes of peak and low flows.

We compared the MidCoast GIS dams coverage (mvbdams.shp) to an older map of dam sites and proposed dam sites from the Oregon Water Resources Department (Oregon Water Resources Board, 1964 #6). We found that the MidCoast GIS coverage was missing a number of dam sites on the OWRD map, and vice versa. We digitized dams and proposed dams off the OWRD map using a heads-up digitization procedure (1964dam2.shp).

There were a total of 57 dams within the study area. We distributed a printed map of the study area showing the digitized dams, for annotation and correction by MCWC local Basin Planning Teams. Twenty dam locations in the north portion of the study area were marked as incorrect by MCWC and BPT members and removed from the 1964dam2.shp coverage. Two additional dams were added during this local editing process; these were also added to 1964dam2.shp. The 1964dam2.shp layer provides MCWC with a layer for recording and storing locations of dams and other hydrologic modifications as they are located and mapped by local observers.
