Hydric Soils
Description
As described on the hydric soils web page, we created a complete soils coverage for the study area by merging GIS Soil Survey coverages obtained from the NRCS and OSU Soil Science Department websites. We then joined the hydric components tables (from downloaded Map Unit Interpretations Record Tables) for all relevant survey areas with the merged soils layer, and queried the joined tables for hydric mapping units, creating a new field ("all_hydcode"), with value "hyd" for hydric, and "non" for non-hydric. The individual report section maps show the soil survey map units which were classified as hydric.

Total area of hydric soils in study area: 10,414 ha.

Uses
A hydric soil is a soil that formed under conditions of saturation, flooding or ponding long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper part. Since these conditions are associated with wetlands and floodplains, hydric soils maps are useful for finding possible locations of features such as backwater and other riverine wetlands, active floodplains, and associated productive channel types. Locating such areas can help resource managers protect, enhance and restore these important resources, thus improving fish and other wildlife habitat.
Notes
The definition of hydric soils is established by the National Technical Committee on Hydric Soils.
