Fish Distribution Methods
Methods
Areas of suitable habitat currently believed to be utilized by wild, natural, and/or hatchery fish populations. The term "currently" is defined as within the past five reproductive cycles. This information is based on the best professional judgement of ODFW staff biologists and in some cases, that of staff from other natural resource agencies within Oregon. Areas displayed may not be utilized by a species of fish on an annual basis due to natural variations in run size, water conditions, and other environmental factors. Due to the dynamic nature of this information, it may be updated at any time. This distribution information makes no statement as to the validity of absence in any paricular area - no attempt has been made to verify where fish are not present. Historic genetic origin and current production origin have yet to be defined and are not found as attributes of the distribution data at this time. Some distribution records contain notes on species origin within the "comment" field. To determine the areas where the distribution has been verified using documented observation records, please contact the data administrator to acquire the related documentation event table.

This data was created through a process where 1:100,000 scale hydrography maps were plotted by hydrologic unit and then provided to ODFW field staff. Based on survey data, supporting documentation and the best professional judgement of the field biologists, the distribution of spawning, rearing and migration use types were marked on the maps with highlighter pens. This data was then digitized by ODFW GIS staff and stored as event tables, in Info file format, as part of the dynamic segmentation data model. For mapping purposes, using the tools of dynamic segmentation, the event tables are combined with the 1:100,000 scale routed streams coverages on a HUC by HUC basis. For the purpose of distributing this data, we have converted the event tables into coverage format with the EVENTARC command. This results in a static version of the "dynamic" data, but in a more commonly used format. To acquire the distribution data in event format, please contact the data administrator.
