Percent shade expresses the "amount of shade provided
to the stream by riparian vegetation and topography" (Moore,
1998). The value represents the percent of the 180 degree
arc above the stream channel that is occupied by shade-providing
features. We obtained reach average percent shade data
from the
ODFW reach-level
GIS coverage and from the paper ODFW summaries of
the
Lincoln District data.
The
USFS Region 6 database
did not contain values for percent shade, nor did it contain
any other fields that could be used as a surrogate for percent
shade. We summarized the percent shade data by
6th
field (weighting by reach length) for the ODFW data
and the Lincoln District data to obtain 6th field averages
from each source (
Dfw_shade and
LD_shade
in
aqhab_sum_final.zip).
We then averaged the data from the two sources (weighting
by total surveyed length from each source) to obtain an
overall average percent shade for each 6th field (
Shd_all
in
aqhab_sum_final.zip).
